On October 26, 2025, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the thermal water in Hajdúszoboszló. To honor this milestone, the city has declared 2025 as a Centenary Year, commemorating this extraordinary event and its discoverer, Dr. Ferenc Pávai Vajna, through a wide range of cultural and scientific programs.

A Brief History of the Discovery
Under the leadership of Dr. Ferenc Pávai Vajna, deep drilling began on December 16, 1924, in the Bánomkert district. In the early morning of October 26, 1925, thermal water containing gas erupted from a depth of 1,091 meters at a temperature of 73 °C. This was the first occurrence in Hungary of such high-temperature water and gas erupting from underground.
A massive column of water, 8 to 10 meters high, shot up from the well, producing 1,600 liters of water and 3,700 cubic meters of gas per minute.

The 100-year-old thermal water of Hajdúszoboszló is not only a natural treasure but also a historical and cultural legacy. Its discovery transformed the city’s fate, development, and international reputation. With its unique iodine-, bromine-, and saline composition, the water has been scientifically proven to help treat musculoskeletal disorders, skin problems, and gynecological conditions.
This centenary year offers a unique opportunity to respectfully commemorate the past, honor the scientists and workers involved, and further strengthen Hajdúszoboszló’s status in the field of health tourism.
